Dispur, October 12: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal sought cooperation from the people of Barak Valley to make the upcoming Namami Barak a grand success.

Participating in an interactive programme organised at Banga Bhawan at Silchar on Wednesday evening to elicit suggestions from the people of Barak for organising Namami Barak, Chief Minister Sonowal said, "Barak Valley with its exquisite culture, language, customs, traditions and of course its beauty holds a tremendous potential and Namami Barak is an attempt to pay tributes to Barak's life giving prosperity and limitless blessings to the region".

"Barak River is our culture, civilisation, economy and life line and celebrating Namami Barak in all the three districts and along the 225 km stretch of the Barak River would be a perfect tribute to river", Sonowal added. The festival to be celebrated from November 18 to 20, 2017 would showcase Barak Valley's rich art, culture, trade and tourism.

Sonowal said that the Barak in its entire stretch showers blessings to drive economic progress of the valley. However, during Monsoon it also causes fury. Government of Assam is committed to address all challenges posed by the Barak and channelize the river to act as a catalyst for State's sustainable development.

"I hope the festival gives an exhilarating and insightful influence that the Barak has on Assam's trade, tourism and culture. He also said that Barak has limitless potential of revitalising the trade and commerce of the region with Bangaldesh, Myanmar and he informed the State Government's keen interest in developing the Barak as the major channel for water transport. He also said nature has given its plenty to Assam and by organising the Namami Barak efforts will be intensified to project the beauty and hospitality of Barak Valley to the outside world. He also said that during Namami Barak creations of Bhupen Hazarika, Nazrul Islam, Rabindra Nath Tagore and Hemanga Biswas would be showcased and through this a bond of unity and harmony would be strengthened between Barak, Brahmaputra, hills and plains.

Deputy Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly Dilip Kumar Paul, PWD Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, several people from three districts also gave their suggestions for making Namami Barak truly an event of spectacle.
